Gentle Thunder-December Wind (Mohawk/Akwesasne)

  1. Thank you for posting this piece. A vivid scene is depicted by the soundscape created by the drums depicting rolling thunder and the vocal cries mimicking the howls of wolves or coyotes. It reminds me of the Kaluli people Reimer describes in his article that the natural sounds around them is part of their music and musical experience. "Gentle Thunder-December Wind" clearly reflects the close connection to nature and natural sounds the Mohawk/Akwesasne people have in their music and culture.

  2. The piece did take me on a journey through a storm. I have never really listened in-depth to Native American Music, but this seemed like a great introduction in something that was clearly depicted in my mind's eye.

  3. Besides embedding a video or audio recording you need to provide information regarding the piece and write a paragraph reacting to a specific prompt. This can be found under Assignments each week. Also, I mistakenly recommended YouTube as a source. For future weeks, please use Smithsonian Folkways, Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, or BBC World Music.
